According to some estimates, in order to achieve better resolution and detail than on 35 mm films, a 16-megapixel sensor is enough. Cameras with such matrices are already available, for example, Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II.

But science does not stand still. A team of researchers at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) has set a goal of achieving a resolution of 100 megapixels per square inch. And this goal has been achieved.

Scientists have created a “living chamber” using genetically modified light-sensitive bacteria as a matrix. Moreover, such bacteria were selected that, during photosynthesis, do not undergo any other undesirable biological processes.

The principle of operation of the “living” matrix, without going into the details of genetic engineering, is that bacteria darken when exposed to light. And such a monochrome image remains captured forever.

While a sufficiently long exposure time is required – 4 hours, and bacteria are sensitive only to red light. But nevertheless, 100-megapixel resolution has been achieved.

Live camera is unlikely to ever be available in stores. But the research from the UC San Francisco team is hard to overestimate. Scientists continue to work on light-sensitive materials using bacteria. To obtain a color image, they are trying to use a special substance that helps the human retina of the eye to distinguish a huge number of shades.
