Renesas enhances MRAM with Grandis
Renesas and Grandis Announce Agreement to Jointly Develop 65nm Magnetic Resistive Memory (MRAM) Processes.
Renesas’ plans for MRAM are quite serious, and the company is going to start shipping systems-on-a-chip (SoC, system-on-a-chip), which integrates this type of non-volatile memory, in the near future.
Founded in 2021, Grandis is known for developing STT-RAM (from spin torque transfer). Companies such as Applied Materials Ventures, Sevin Rosen Funds, Matrix Partners and Incubic have already invested in Grandis. The essence of the technology underlying STT-RAM is to order the directions of the spin magnetic moments of electrons passing through the tunnel magnetoresistive element. Writing is made by spin-polarized current (formed by electrons, whose spins “point” in one direction).
Grandis claims STT-RAM uses less power and has better scalability than conventional MRAM. This means that at speeds comparable to conventional MRAM, STT-RAM can be produced at lower rates, which means that production costs can be reduced.
