Technologic Systems: TS-7300 ARM9 processor-based single board computer running Linux
Technologic Systems will soon begin shipping the new TS-7300 single-board computer (SBC) for use where security is critical. These include, in particular, security systems, routers, firewalls and game machines (don’t laugh, this is not about game consoles).
Currently TS-7300 samples are supplied by the manufacturer as a development kit and accompanied by Linux (Debian) operating system on SD card. The choice of flash memory as a drive, according to the manufacturer, was due to the higher reliability in comparison with hard drives, especially in adverse operating conditions. Reliability is further enhanced with hot-swap RAID capability using a second SD card slot.
System security is ensured by several key functions, Technologic Systems reports. In particular, TS-7300 checks its checksum before running the code from the SD card. Additionally SD can be password protected and hardware-bound to specific motherboard.
The TS-7300 is based on the Cirrus EP9302, a highly integrated SoC (system-on-chip) that integrates an ARM920T core operating at 200 MHz, a MaverickCrunch math coprocessor, a MaverickKey cryptographic engine, and peripheral and memory interfaces.
The system uses a set of programmable logic Altera 2C8 Cyclone (more than 8000 logic elements), serving peripherals: Ethernet, eight COM ports, VGA. This FPGA (field-programmable gate array) can be optionally reprogrammed, for example, to run the Linux kernel not from read-only memory, but from RAM (Linux on a soft-core).
TS-7300 comes with Linux kernel 2.four.26, patched for ARM9 processor, and drivers for all system devices.
The novelty will begin mass production in the second quarter of this year, its price will be $ 189 in the minimum configuration. In the meantime, a development kit is available, which includes a TS-7300, 512 MB SD memory card with pre-installed Debian Linux OS, a power supply, a set of cables and CD with kernel and application sources. The motherboard is compatible with the TS-720 case, produced by the company for the TS-7000 line.
