Will India be able to repeat the Chinese miracle?
Whatever the attitude to this fact, China has long been a favorite destination for Western firms for the location of production of consumer goods, including many names of consumer electronics. However, the neighboring country of China, India, for a number of reasons (and not least due to strong demographic growth, which, unlike China, India has not yet curbed) can compete with the Celestial Empire. The Indian Semiconductor Agency (ISA), which aims to turn India into an alternative center of gravity for electronics manufacturing, is already in talks with organizations such as the FSA (Fabless Semiconductor Association) and SIA (Semiconductor Industry Association), the source said. ISA has reportedly already entered into a partnership with Taiwan’s SoC Consortium.
Through the efforts of ISA, engineers who received their education in India remain to work in the country, and do not leave for North America or Europe – in particular, within the framework of the Si-Quest (Si – from silicon) program, which operates in 30 Indian universities.
Also, through the efforts of ISA, an annual conference is organized at which the economic and technological aspects of the semiconductor industry in India are discussed. The conference is expected to be held in Bangalore every December with speakers from leading IT companies.
Realizing that its own forces are not enough, ISA attracted Frost & Sullivan analysts to study industrial prospects and investment climate.
Let us note from ourselves that the hype raised around Indian programs for the development of the semiconductor industry, which is practically absent in the country now, may well turn out to be excessive – life, as you know, makes its own adjustments, and the world economy, crushed by high energy prices, is going through hard times. But it should be noted that the organization of large-scale industrial production of consumer electronics today, thanks to the sophistication of technologies, is not such a difficult task – there are more than enough qualified personnel in India today. Therefore, economic aspects come to the fore, in particular, the question of whether the Indians will be able to compete with the Chinese in terms of production costs. Presumably, the answer to this question will not have to wait long.
