Why we won’t see Blu-ray burners just yet

BD9 “bureaucratic” problems appear to be the key factor delaying the release of the first Blu-ray burners.

Blu-ray promoters (like Pioneer) are now finalizing the BD9 format licensing process due to be adopted by the end of April.

BD9 was first offered to the Blu-ray Disc Association by Warner Home Video as a low-cost alternative to 25GB / 50GB BD-ROM. At the time, Warner needed a Blu-ray player capable of playing 9GB BD9 discs designed to be read by a red laser. Such discs can be produced on existing DVD production equipment, which significantly reduces their cost in relation to 25/50 GB BD.

BD9 movies will be recorded using the H high definition codec.264 / VC1 and copy protected by AACS / BD+. Of course, on drives with a blue laser, only reproduction of these media is possible.

Despite the fact that the Blu-ray Disc Association did not officially announce BD9, it was accepted by them, according to a source. BD9 Licensing Process Expected to Push First BD Recorder Shipments to Early May. Their release (as well as all BD devices) had already been postponed earlier for licensing reasons, but then it was about the Media Protection Algorithm (AACS).

Perhaps, few people expected at the beginning of the year that the beginning of the Blu-ray era would drag on so long, and even because of the “paper” problems ..
