MRV Unveils New OSM6500 Carrier-Grade Router Switches – High Performance Scalable Platform for 10 Gigabit Speeds. OSM6500 devices can be used both in large corporate networks as backbone routers and in telecom operators’ networks for aggregating Fast / Gigabit Ethernet connections, providing Ethernet / IP / MPLS services and VPN layers 2 and 3.
The architecture of the OSM6500 platform is modular and based on a chassis with a different number of slots in which interface and service modules are installed. There are currently two chassis available – 2-slot OSM6502 and 8-slot OSM6508. Both chassis types come with redundant AC and DC power supplies, and the OSM6508 also accepts a third power supply for 2 + 1 operation.
All interface modules are hot-swappable and based on an architecture with network processors, which allows further changes and additions to device functions through software updates without the need to replace the modules themselves.
The following interface modules are available today:
- OSM6500-48FE-TX – with 48 10 / 100BaseT ports;
- OSM6500-24GE-SFP – with 24 SFP ports for Gigabit Ethernet transceivers;
- OSM6500-24GE-TX – with 24 10/100 / 1000BaseT ports;
- OSM6500-2x10G-XEN – with 2 XENPAK ports for 10 Gigabit Ethernet transceivers (an 8-port modification of this module is planned in the future).
When installed in the chassis of the standard OSM6500-FM control module, the OSM6500 switches support advanced functionality, including:
- Full port IPv4 routing, RIP v1, v2, OSPF support; routing of multicast traffic IGMP (v1, v2), PIM-SM; VRRP reservation; DHCP Server / Relay support.
- 802 standard VLAN.1Q (up to 4K per switch), private VLAN, protocol-based VLAN. GVRP is also supported for automatic VLAN registration and management.
- Spanning Tree including 802.1D as well as Rapid Spanning Tree 802.1w and Multiple Spanning Tree 802.1s. Also, OSM6500 devices support ERRP (Ethernet Ring Redundancy Protocol), developed by MRV specifically for redundancy in ring topologies, it provides switching in the redistribution of 50-100 ms, which is significantly faster than the commonly used RSTP or OSPF.
- Traffic classification and QoS support at Layers 2/3/4, tagging and packet classification based on IP Precedence / TOS and DSCP / TOS fields. Rate limiting for both inbound and outbound traffic on each port.
- Support for security and authentication mechanisms RADIUS, TACACS +, SSH (v1.5 / v2.0), IEEE 802.1x as well as ACLs (at levels 2, 3, and 4).
- SNMP management (v1, 2, 3), RMON (groups 1, 2, 3 and 9), Web-based management, Telnet, MegaVision Web or other SNMP-compatible management system.
In addition, when using the service module OSM6500-ESM with extended functionality, the OSM6500 switches support a number of additional functions that are primarily demanded by telecom operators. These include support for IS-IS and BGP routing protocols, as well as MPLS (including VPN Layers 2 and 3) and VPLS-BGP. OSM6500 can act as a Broadband Remote Access Server (BRAS). One OSM6500 switch can support up to 60,000 subscribers connected via PPPoE (PPP over Ethernet), while using RADIUS for their authentication and billing, and DHCP for assigning dynamic IP addresses. An optional service module OSM6500-ESM-FW is also available, which implements the functions of the built-in firewall.
