MAXIMUS VIII RANGER – Support
Why Microsoft Supports HD DVD?
An official from Microsoft, which is known to have sided with HD DVD in a dispute between two contenders for the role of next-generation optical media, explained the decision.
According to the head of the division, which defines the technical strategy for the development of the direction of digital media (Windows Digital Media), the company’s move was dictated by the fact that Blu-ray technology could not meet several important criteria.
A year and a half ago, the two formats looked very close, but Blu-ray was presented in a slightly more favorable light, especially given the declared capacity of the media. Over time, it became clear to what extent the plans and declarations of each of the parties were able to come true. This is what influenced the company’s decision.
The important criteria in question are as follows:
- The consumer’s ability to make authorized copies of discs, including ? transferring recordings to a hard drive for later playback in the digital home entertainment system;
- Support for hybrid discs that can be read by existing players and those that will appear in the future;
- Low production cost;
- Low cost of replication;
- Media volume.
The representative of the company separately clarified the last point. Yes, “on paper” Blu-ray has the edge, but in reality there is no evidence that 50GB discs have moved outside the laboratory, and there is no indication that it will.
The decision by Microsoft and Intel to support HD DVD was a significant factor that strengthened the position of this format.
