LG starts selling 1400: 1 contrast LCD monitors. But the contrast itself will come in time in April

We have already written about the upcoming high-contrast LCD monitors from LG Electronics, but today there is one more reason to return to the topic – the first copies of the announced series – 17-inch L1732P and 19-inch L1932P – went on sale in Europe. Both have a resolution of 1280×1024 pixels and can be rotated to portrait or landscape orientation.

In terms of speed characteristics, the new items are ahead of most LCD displays on the market now – the response time of the matrix is only 4 ms. Medium contrast (300 cd / m2) and viewing angles (170 °) are complemented by an impressive 700: 1 contrast ratio.

Most interesting, however, is that starting in April 2021, the contrast ratio of the models presented will be increased to an industry record 1400: 1 thanks to DFC (Digital Fine Contrast) technology. There are 2 options, due to which this can be achieved:

  • The revision of the monitors sold will be updated, which means that lines of dissatisfied customers who bought the same product, but with worse characteristics, will line up in stores.
  • The F-Engine chip, which LG says is responsible for improving the image, is present in the models on sale, but software is required to implement its capabilities, which will be available in April.

In the latter case, there are still some doubts about the reality of the declared contrast ratio of 1400: 1 – after all, the physical indicators of the matrix cannot be improved by software. It is possible that we are talking only about the independent intelligent selection of the optimal brightness parameters by the monitor, depending on what is currently displayed on it – text, video, game, web page, etc.d. In this case, LG’s innovation can hardly be considered as such – this technology is already being used by some manufacturers.

Be that as it may, the available specifications, coupled with the presence of DVI and D-Sub outputs and compliance with the TCO-03 standard, make the L1732P and L1932P an interesting option for the buyer. Will they be able to move from the category of interesting to the category of unique – it will become clear in April.

MSRP for European retailers is $ 450 for the L1732P and $ 540 for the L1932P.
