ATI is a potential leader in physics acceleration?

This week is a landmark for the further development of physics acceleration in games. Ageia finally finished its PhysX, NVIDIA announced SLI support for Havok FX. ATI came out with information about its support for accelerating physics a little later, but this does not make it an outsider in the competition in a new kind of program for accelerators.

Colleagues from PC Perspective spoke with ATI representatives during the GDC, which is now taking place in San Jose. Here are the facts about the support of physics by accelerators of the Canadian company.

First, the Havok FX core supports both NVIDIA and ATI graphics cards. Today’s physics in games is very simplistic compared to what takes place in real life. Collisions and interactions of objects, as a rule, are calculated based on parallelograms, in which the objects are enclosed. Further development of object physics, such as counting spheres, tetrahedrons and object meshes, is practically not used yet.

This simplistic approach leads to the fact that the architecture of the R520 and R580 cannot be deployed in full force. As an example, the game Half-Life 2 was given, in which, according to ATI, the execution of physical calculations by a graphics processing unit (GPU) can increase performance by only 20-30%.

Secondly, the performance of the R580 is approximately 375 gigaflops for one card and twice as much for the CrossFire configuration. Compare with 10 gigaflops for modern CPUs or 25 for PhysX (last figure is approximate, according to ATI). Even with the higher efficiency of a specialized accelerator, the gap in net computing power suggests that video cards are in a better position.

Third, the R580 architecture assumes efficient execution of complex branching of logical operations. This allows the chip to break physical computations into smaller and smaller blocks and process them faster. Below we see a graphical representation of how the size of the processed block affects the efficiency of the physics calculation.

ATI claims that with detailed physics in small blocks, the advantage of the R520 and R580 architecture over competitors can reach impressive dimensions (the base is taken from its own accelerator X1600, the processing of object physics through parallelepipeds, spheres, tetrahedrons and grids is demonstrated).

The fourth, and perhaps the most important point, is that ATI claims to develop software that allows applications to access physics calculations directly to the graphics chip, bypassing the conversion of instructions through the Direct3D or OpenGL programming interface. This approach will allow you to avoid unnecessary transformations and speed up the processing of physics.

Fifth, unlike NVIDIA, where only one of the two SLI cards can do physics calculations, ATI claims that if the GPU has enough performance, then it can spend part of its cycles on calculating physics.

Finally, sixth, the greater flexibility of ATI lies in the fact that by purchasing a new generation card from this manufacturer in the future, you can leave the previous one in the system and load it exclusively with physics calculations.

As you can see, while the positions of the Canadian company are seen in a very rosy light, but do not forget that these are just the prospects presented to us by the manufacturer himself. How everything will turn out in reality, and whether the undertaking will not repeat the fate of, for example, the once-promising Truform technology, – time will tell.
