AMD Turion News: Models, Revisions, 100MHz Granularity Technology

This news is a continuation of the topic of the future of mobile processors AMD Turion, which, at the suggestion of the Chinese site HKEPC, we covered some time ago (we recommend that you read the previous news to avoid confusion in the names of models and cores).

Now some new details have become known, with which we are introducing you.

So, in the second half of 2021, we are waiting for the following models of dual-core mobile processors Turion 64 (codename Taylor, official presentation, tentatively – June 2021.):

  • TL-60 (2.0GHz / 512Kb x2)
  • TL-56 (1.8GHz / 512Kb x 2)
  • TL-52 (1.6GHz / 512Kb x 2)
  • TL-50 (1.6GHz / 256Kb x 2).

All of them will be designed for the Socket S1 processor socket, manufactured using the 90nm process technology and have revision F.
Support for DDR2-667 memory, PowerNow energy saving technology!, AMD-v virtualization technology. Power dissipation will be 35 W.

The Mobile Sempron series will be represented by models based on the Keene core:

  • 3500+ (1.8 GHz / 512 KB L2)
  • 3400+ (1.8 GHz / 256 KB L2)
  • 3200+ (1.6 GHz / 512 KB L2)

In fact, the only fundamental difference between Keene and his older brothers, Taylor, is the presence of only one core. Naturally, the TDP level is also reduced – it is 25 W. In addition, there will obviously be no support for AMD-v, however, in an entry-level laptop it is difficult to imagine its scope.

In the second quarter of 2021, we will see the beginning of the revision change for AMD mobile processors – Rev.F will be replaced by Rev.G. This is due to the implementation of the 65nm process technology, which will start with the Turion X2 64, and then will cover the Mobile Sempron. The process of changing technology will be quite extended in time, obviously, there will be the same models on sale, produced by different factories using a different technical process.

What will Tyler and Sherman get (the next incarnation of the Mobile Sempron) besides, of course, the reduced size of the crystal? The processor 638-pin Socket S1 will remain unchanged, however, we have not yet heard about an initiative similar to Intel’s Interchangeability Initiative from AMD, so this is unlikely to be an additional plus for buyers. Power consumption of mobile processors will remain at the same level.

The main innovation will be 100MHz Granularity technology, the next generation of PowerNow!. Its essence lies in the fact that every second the processor frequency can change by 100 MHz, depending on its load. The lower limit of the operating frequency of AMD Turion and Mobile Sempron is not yet known, but it can be assumed that this approach will allow these solutions to successfully compete with laptops of the Intel Santa Rosa platform, built on Merom processors. As a reminder, Intel reads at least 5 hours of battery life to its 2021 laptops.
