IEEE 802.fifteen.3a will not standardize UWB
IEEE 802 Working Group.fifteen.3a, created to standardize ultra-wideband (UWB) technologies, finally comes to a consensus – it’s time to self-dissolve. And during the vote this week, she disbanded herself without approving the UWB standard, having spent almost three years on this activity and a lot of taxpayer money.
During the three years of the working group, there was a heated debate over which option to standardize: the proposed (then Motorola Semiconductor) Freescale DS-UWB, the option using the entire frequency range “in one piece” or proposed by the WiMedia Alliance (which includes Intel , Staccato, Wisair and Alereon) MBOA-UWB, 528 MHz subband option using Orthogonal Carrier Multiplexing (OFDM) technology. In the first case, the throughput could reach 1 Gbps, but at a distance of only up to 3 m, in the second – up to 480 Mbps, but the range could be up to 10 m. (To be precise, the maximum throughput in the first case is achieved at a distance of up to 1 m, in the second – up to 3 m. The bandwidth at the maximum distance is 480 and 110 Mbps, respectively).
In addition to these two options, there were two more intermediate ones – with wider subbands, but only MBOA-UWB and DS-UWB had at least some chances of standardization in the IEEE.
None of the options was able to collect 75% of the votes of the commission members required for approval as a standard. However, 94.7% of members voted to dissolve the working group – stunning unanimity.
What is the future of technology now? It all depends on how ready-made solutions will be promoted to the market. It is known, for example, that Freescale has turned its gaze towards automotive electronics, and WiMedia Alliance is actively “pushing” Wireless USB. However, the future integration of UWB technologies with Bluetooth, scheduled for 2021-2021, is becoming questionable – the Bluetooth SIG group emphasized that they will think about the integration of UWB only if the IEEE comes to any one version of the physical layer, which never happened.
