Cooler Radeon X1900 XTX in comparative testing with alternative solutions
ATI Radeon X1900 XTX is currently one of the most powerful graphics cards on the market, but at the same time one of the hottest. Our tests have shown that its temperature under load can reach 90 ° C, which inevitably reduces the durability of the product.
At the same time, it cannot be said that ATI approached the cooling system of its flagship according to the residual principle – a massive copper radiator is blown by a 60-mm fan. However, despite this, the temperature, even at rest, rarely drops below 60 ° C.
Colleagues from the Legion Hardware website decided to check what is the reason for such a severe temperature regime in the X1900 XTX. Two fairly fresh alternative coolers were compared with the reference cooling system – Arctic-Cooling Accelero X2 (in the first picture) and Thermalright V-1 Ultra (in the second). Both of them began to be sold not so long ago, and their price is about 35-45 dollars.
The test system was based on an Athlon 64 3700+ processor overclocked to 2.66 GHz and cooled with a Gigabyte 3D Galaxy water cooling system. Two 120-mm fans on the front and rear walls of the case worked for blowing and blowing.
The Accelero X2 fan spun at 2000 rpm, while the V-1 Ultra spun slightly faster at 2500 rpm.
A modern game FEAR with enabled full-screen anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering was used as a test loading the card. The card worked under load for half an hour, after which the readings were taken. In addition, the temperature was measured after the computer was at rest for 20 minutes (Windows desktop).
All three cooling systems (standard and two alternative) were installed with Silverstone Temjin 5 thermal paste containing silver particles.
Here are the test results obtained (load / rest (° C) / noise level under load / no load (dB)):
- Accelero X2: 86/53/51/51
- Thermalright V-1 Ultra: 79/46/55/55
- Standard cooler: 95/59/63/54.
As you can see, both alternative coolers constantly operate at the same fan speed, and are significantly quieter than the standard cooling system, while providing temperatures up to 17 ° C lower than when using the reference.
To be fair, we note that ATI cooling is slightly more efficient in terms of the effect of the video card on the overall temperature in the case – the difference was 1-3 degrees.
Thus, we see that an extremely powerful video card by the standards of today, nevertheless, is not without drawbacks that can be eliminated on your own by purchasing a separate cooling system.
