A nanomachine is not yet a nanorobot, but it can already do a lot

Man has always learned from nature, however, for a long time, the creation of devices and apparatus, the prototypes of which are found around us, was limited to macroscopic objects. However, the successes of microelectronics and the need for its transition to a qualitatively new level pushed researchers to develop molecular devices – self-assembling semiconductor elements controlled by the light of mechanical “tweezers”, etc. P.

From the same series and the latest development of scientists from Rice University (Rice University), which created a “molecular machine” (nanocar), containing in its design chassis, axles and wheels (see. In addition, the researchers also moved the “nanomachines” using the STM probe (needle) and showed that the resistance along and across the axes of rotation of the “wheels” is different.

As for the synthesis of molecular machines, it took almost eight years to develop this technology. The most difficult thing was to find a way to attach fullerenes to the axes without destroying the chemical structure of the molecule, since palladium was used as a catalyst to create the chassis, and fullerenes suppressed reactions involving palladium.

Finally, the sacramental question – what is it for? A team of scientists from Rice University report that they managed to create a “nanomachine” controlled by light (presumably, it uses the well-known effect of converting the absorbed energy of a quantum of light into energy of mechanical motion, used in the above-mentioned “light tweezers”), and even a “nano-truck “- a molecule that is able to move another molecule.
