ZyXEL Expands IP Telephony Support in ADSL 2+ Modems and ZyWALL Screens

ZyXEL announces a significant firmware update for the P-660H / HW EE and P-662H / HW EE modems with an official press release. By upgrading the firmware, users can significantly simplify configuration and make it more convenient to use packet telephony and any other applications based on SIP – the most popular protocol for multimedia interaction today. The firmware supports the Full Cone NAT and SIP ALG – a built-in software gateway for applications using the SIP protocol.

The correct operation of multimedia applications with NAT and firewalls can be improved using three alternative approaches:

  • Proxy server (Outbond Proxy) on the operator’s side. This method is the most versatile and allows SIP applications that support Outbound Proxy to work with almost any address translation system. However, all voice traffic of subscribers must pass through the Outbound Proxy server, which leads to a decrease in the quality of communication, imposes increased requirements on the configuration and performance of such a server, and negatively affects security.
  • SIP ALG gateway in client router. This approach allows you to implement SIP telephony services in a network with address translation without using auxiliary external devices. Disadvantages – more complex software implementation, increased load on the router, relatively low prevalence and low scalability of solutions. Nevertheless, SIP ALG can find application in relatively small projects where it is necessary to minimize investment in the network infrastructure.
  • Full Cone NAT on the router with the installation of a STUN server on the operator’s side. With minimal investment in network infrastructure, this method ensures correct routing of incoming and outgoing calls and stable operation of applications (STUN protocol support is now implemented in most soft and hardware IP phones). Most Russian SIP operators have STUN servers in their infrastructure and prefer to use subscriber routers that implement Full Cone NAT.
  • Full Cone NAT and FTP / SIP / H.323 ALGs are built into all ZyWALL UTM firewalls. New firmware for P-660H / HW EE and P662H / HW EE modems supporting these technologies are available for free download, indexes PE10 and QR8, respectively.
