ABBYY Announces New SDK for Document Recognition, Form Processing and PDF Conversion

In November 2021, ABBYY plans to release a developer toolkit (SDK) – ABBYY FineReader Engine 8.0 for Windows. This SDK contains all the available recognition technologies developed by ABBYY to date: OCR (Optical Character Recognition), ICR (Intelligent Character Recognition), Optical Mark Recognition (OMR), 1D and 2D barcodes, PDF processing, data extraction from forms (FormReader) and unstructured documents (FlexiCapture). All functions of recognition and data collection from documents, forms and PDF files are available through a single universal API (Application Programming Interface).

The new version of the product will improve the capabilities of full-text document recognition, for the first time there will be a full set of functions designed for text recognition at the level of individual fields. The listed capabilities are widely demanded in the automation of tasks such as classification and indexing of documents, extraction of a set of attributes from documents using intelligent algorithms for information analysis. Similar tasks are encountered when processing passports, streaming input of financial documents, contracts, etc.d. These capabilities, combined with improved PDF conversion functions, make ABBYY FineReader Engine 8.0 convenient and effective tool for building solutions and programs for document entry and data collection.

ABBYY FineReader Engine 8.0 recognizes printed text (OCR) in 189 languages, hand-printed fields (ICR) in 91 languages. In the new version of the product, for the first time, the possibility of low-level control of the recognition process is implemented, namely the ability to adjust to the required accuracy by influencing the choice of hypotheses formed during the recognition process.

The new version will be delivered complete with code examples demonstrating how to use ABBYY FineReader Engine most effectively in various typical work scenarios. Such scenarios are, for example, “convert to searchable PDF file”, “field-level recognition”, “archiving with image saving and indexing”, “full-text conversion to RTF”, “full-text conversion to HTML”, etc. Each example is a small program that you can compile and learn how it works. The descriptions of the optimal parameters are given, the set contains typical images and data on the speed of operation and the quality of recognition. Developers can use examples as templates when creating their own programs and solutions.

In addition, the new version has a diagnostic function that allows you to track all calls to ABBYY FineReader Engine functions and measure the speed of their work.

New features of ABBYY FineReader Engine 8.0:

Improving basic recognition technologies

  • Improved recognition accuracy of printed characters. ABBYY FineReader Engine 8.0 demonstrates a significant improvement in the accuracy of hard-to-read documents. Accuracy of recognition of faxes and documents scanned at low resolution increased by 30%.
  • Acceleration of recognition of fields filled with block letters by hand. The new version of the product adds a “fast” ICR mode. In this mode, fields are recognized 2-2.5 times faster than in normal mode.
  • Adaptive image processing of documents captured with a digital camera. Using an automatic mechanism to compensate for distortions typical for digital photography, it was possible to increase the recognition accuracy of photographed documents by 40%.

Improved recognition mode for individual document fields

ABBYY FineReader Engine 8.0 has a number of features to improve accuracy when recognizing individual document fields. These functions, which use OCR, ICR, OMR and barcode recognition technologies, will be especially useful when building control systems based on ABBYY FineReader Engine (checking passports, driver’s licenses, warehouse nomenclature, etc.).d.), streaming input systems, document indexing and data collection systems.

  • Improved data extraction from fields with different borders and frames, including letters in frames, letters in a comb, text along the line, and even unevenly filled fields, the data in which goes beyond the boundaries of the field.
  • Determination of spaces in the field increases the accuracy of text recognition in fields where one word or a phrase can be found. In the new system, data validation dictionaries used in recognition can contain not only words, but also phrases.
  • Intelligent processing of words and symbols belonging to more than one block. The system correctly recognizes text even in cases where some characters, words or parts of them appear in two or more text blocks at the same time. In this case, words or symbols will be included in the recognition result of the block in the context of which they best fit.
  • Image cleaning. Cleaning of text blocks has been implemented; when cleaning, it is possible to specify the size of the black and white fractions of “garbage”.
  • Dynamic adjustment in the process of recognition. The new version of the product provides a mechanism for influencing the list of hypotheses directly in the recognition process. It allows you to selectively increase the weights of hypotheses and thus influence the result of the recognition process.

Improved PDF processing mechanisms

ABBYY FineReader Engine 8.0 processes PDF files more accurately and faster than previous versions. Also in the new version, the list of features has been significantly expanded. Now, on the basis of the product, it is possible to more fully solve the tasks of converting: PDF files – into files of other formats, images scanned or captured by a digital camera – into PDF files with a text layer. The text layer can be used when building an index for the subsequent search for a file in the repository.

  • Import
    • > Recognition is now more accurate and almost twice as fast. When processing PDF files, the new version of ABBYY FineReader Engine detects the presence of a text layer and its integrity. This information is matched with data from the service fields of the PDF file (annotations, metadata, text objects, connected fonts, content streams). As a result, for each text block, a decision is made: whether to use the text extracted from the corresponding layer, or recognize the block. The decision for each block is made independently. This approach provides significantly faster and better quality PDF conversion.
    • Recognition of internal and external links. The system recognizes and reproduces hyperlinks, both internal (for example, the table of contents of a PDF document) and external, to Internet resources.
  • Export
    • Support for encryption algorithms and other means of access control. ABBYY FineReader Engine 8.0 allows you to save recognition results as a password-protected PDF file. The password can be set both for opening a file and for other actions with a document (printing, extracting content, the ability to edit, making comments, adding / deleting pages, etc.). At the same time, you can choose different encryption levels with a key length of 40 or 128 bits and using both the standard encryption algorithm RC4 and the new algorithm of the AES standard (Advanced Encrypting Standard).
    • Generating tags. The eighth version of the system is capable of creating PDF-documents with tags, which provide easy viewing on screens of any size, in particular, on screens of pocket computers.
    • Exporting metadata. Expanded the ability to save various metadata in the generated PDF files: bookmarks, hyperlinks, cross-links, etc.P.

New document analysis mode

ABBYY FineReader Engine 8.0 introduced the document analysis mode for full-text indexing, in which all text information is automatically located and recognized on the page, including the one inside pictures, graphs, diagrams, etc.P. To build a high-quality full-text index, extracting all text information from a document is extremely important.

Entering data from documents and forms

The new version of ABBYY FineReader Engine provides data entry from documents, which can be both structured (with a fixed arrangement of fields on the sheet) and flexible forms (with an arbitrary arrangement of fields). This was achieved due to the inclusion in ABBYY FineReader Engine 8.0 basics of the ABBYY FormReader 6 form input program.5 and special tools for processing flexible forms – ABBYY FlexiCapture Studio 1.five. Thus, developers have the opportunity to implement the functions of entering documents, both printed and filled in by hand with separate letters. New features introduced by ABBYY FlexiCapture Studio 1.five:

  • Support for table elements. Provides correct recognition of documents containing tables, fast and accurate processing of table fields. This function is especially effective when recognizing invoices, invoices, other source documents and financial documents.
  • New specialized items. Added specialized types of digital items, “Phone” and “Currency”. They allow you to improve the quality of recognition due to a more complete and accurate description of the format of data such as phones, as well as amounts expressed in different currencies.
  • Filtering the background. Advanced image preprocessing technology improves overall recognition accuracy through high-quality background and texture removal.
  • Pre-recognition of multilingual documents. Added the ability to pre-recognize multilingual (English-Italian, Russian-German, etc.).P.) documents.

Setting profiles set

The new version includes sets of predefined ABBYY FineReader Engine parameters (profiles) that are recommended for the most popular typical applications: converting to a searchable PDF file, field-level recognition, archiving with image processing and indexing, full-text conversion to RTF and HTML, and dr. These profiles help, by calling one function, to set such settings for all important stages (from image preprocessing to exporting recognized text), which allow you to achieve the optimal ratio of speed and quality.

Supported input and output formats

ABBYY FineReader Engine supports opening images in all common formats: BMP, PCX, DCX, JPEG, JPEG 2000, PNG, TIFF, and PDF. The eighth version adds the ability to open files of popular graphic formats GIF and DjVu.

Saving documents is possible in formats DOC, RTF, PDF, HTML, PPT, TXT, XLS, DBF, XML.

Prices and delivery terms

ABBYY FineReader Engine is delivered as a set of dynamic link libraries (DLL). The ABBYY FineReader Engine Application Programming Interface (API) supports the COM (Component Object Model) standard and allows you to create applications in the C / C ++, Visual Basic, Visual Studio development environments.Net and any other that support COM components.

Product sales will begin in November 2021. Information about the cost and terms of licensing, as well as additional technical information, can be obtained from the nearest ABBYY office.
