Independent tests of Athlon 64 X2 4600+ Socket AM2 and Intel Conroe E6600

In early March, during the IDF forum, some journalists were able to “quite accidentally” get access to a system based on the Intel Conroe processor. Test results were disappointing for the competing Athlon.

It is difficult to consider such tests independent, so we treated them with restraint. Now there is information that is also difficult to confirm or deny, but, nevertheless, more claiming independence.

One of the Xtremesystems forum participants, according to him, managed to get his hands on 2 systems based on two unreleased AMD Socket AM2 and Intel Conroe processors.

AMD processor was a dual-core version of Athlon 64 X2 4600+ (200 MHz x 12, 2 x 512 KB L2 cache). He worked in a motherboard based on the NVIDIA C51G chipset.
Memory timings are curious – 5-5-5-5-15 1T for DDR2, 667 MHz, 2 x 1 GB (dual-channel mode). The processor was overclocked by raising the system bus frequency to 225 MHz. Thus, the resulting frequency of its operation was 2.7 GHz.

Intel Conroe E6600 (2.4GHz) tested on Intel G965 engineering motherboard.

In the SuperPI test, which calculates PI with a given precision, a million decimal places was counted by an AMD processor in 39.8 seconds, and Conroe did it in 21.2. It should be noted that in this test a traditionally high role is played by the speed of the memory subsystem, and in the first case it was clearly not functioning in optimal mode.

In other tests carried out, the processor strengths were distributed as follows (Athlon 64 X2 4600 + / Intel Conroe E6600):

  • PC Mark 2021 CPU Test: 5510/6101
  • 3DMark 2021, CPU test: 1073/1413
  • 3DMark 2021 CPU Test: 5582/8320
  • ScienceMark 2.0: 1454/1310.

Thus, these test results, although published on the forum, are still interesting as the first independent tests of future processors from two leading manufacturers. And, as we can see, while Conroe has an advantage, as it was demonstrated by the first tests.

Note that the temperature of Athlon 64 X2 4600+ Socket AM2 with standard cooling was no more than 35 degrees under load.

Let’s remind that before the release of AMD Socket AM2 – a little less than two months, and Conroe should appear on sale in the third quarter (obviously, closer to its end). Until then, AMD still has time to improve the performance of its solutions, otherwise it will be difficult to compete. And, of course, we urge you to treat the provided information as unofficial, what the real performance of the new processors will be – we will know for certain only after their official release.
