NEC UWB chipset – fewer wires soon

The ISSCC conference in San Francisco continues to delight with announcements of new technologies and products.

NEC presented its vision of a promising technology for broadband wireless access (Ultra Wideband Wireless, UWB, we strongly recommend that you read an article about it on our website), which demonstrated samples of chipsets that allow data transfer at speeds up to 480 Mbps at distances of up to three meters and up to 110 Mbps over a distance of up to ten meters.

As you can see, the distances at which UWB transmitters can be located hardly allow us to count on the creation of wireless network solutions that can compete with Wi-Fi, where the distance between nodes can be up to 100 meters or more. However, there are many areas for which a distance of more than 10 meters is simply not needed, but a wide bandwidth is more important. The low price of the final products and the absence of the need for licensing the frequencies used are also welcomed. All three requirements are met by UWB.

Its transmitter emits short pulses of a special shape, selected so as to evenly distribute all the pulse energy over a given sufficiently wide spectrum region (approximately from 3 GHz to 10 GHz). The data, in turn, is encoded by the polarity and relative position of the pulses. As a result, having a sufficiently high total power transmitted over the air and, therefore, a significant distance of reliable reception, the UWB signal at each specific point of the spectrum (i.e.e. on each specific licensed frequency band) does not exceed extremely low, many times less than that of narrowband signals, the value. As a result, in accordance with the relevant FCC rule, such a signal becomes acceptable for use, despite the fact that it occupies, among other things, portions of the spectrum already allocated for other applications.
