Intel’s “school laptop” for $ 400 is a competitor to OLPC?

Intel recently criticized the $ 100 laptop project for children in developing countries. At the time, an Intel spokesperson called the laptop being developed as part of the MIT One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project a “gadget” rather than a full-fledged computer. Recall that Bill Gates attacked a $ 100 laptop for children a little later, believing that laptops can be replaced by smartphones.

The coordinated actions of the PC hardware manufacturer and the operating system developer could not be accidental, and some observers assumed that Intel was preparing its own version of the “school laptop”, which, of course, will be distributed with Windows. These assumptions were supported by the available information that Intel is trying to enter the market of developing countries with entry-level PCs.

And the other day, the head of Intel demonstrated a laptop called Edu-Wise, which you see in the picture. The novelty is intended for the Brazilian education system, the cost of a laptop for schoolchildren is about $ 400. The start of deliveries is scheduled for next year. It is likely that the government will pay for the computers, because such a high price pushes the computer far beyond the purchasing power of the majority of the population of Brazil and other countries for which it is intended. However, so far there is no certainty even that $ 400 is the final amount: just remember how quickly the $ 600-900 declared as the price of the “ultraportable” Microsoft Origami computer (UMPC) turned into 1000 euros in practice.
