Bluetooth of the future will use UWB

WiMedia Alliance (WMA) announced that future development of Bluetooth will be based on the Ultra-WideBand (UWB) standard. Next Generation Bluetooth Chipsets Using Unlicensed Band Coming In Q3 2021.

This approach will overcome the limitations of the wireless interface speed imposed by the operating frequency 2.4 GHz. As a reminder, today’s version of Bluetooth 2.0 is capable of transferring data at speeds up to 784 Kbps, and in EDR mode – up to 2 Mbps.

UWB got its name “ultra-wideband communication” due to the fact that this standard for communication uses the widest frequency range available today – from 3 to 10 GHz. UWB Bluetooth will use frequencies above 6 GHz. The use of technology can potentially provide data transfer rates up to 480 Mbps.

The problem seems to be a small theoretical communication range using UWB – no more than 3 meters, however, for tasks where range is important and speed is not fundamental (for example, remote controls), it will be possible to use Bluetooth 2.0 (communication radius 100 meters).

The Bluetooth standardization group argues that the chosen approach will maintain compatibility of future wireless adapters of this standard with existing ones.
