Why there are so many X800s?
As you know, ATI has added another member to the X800 family – X800 GTO. Taking into account the two variants of the GTO: with 256 MB of memory operating at 490 MHz, and 128 MB – 350 MHz, the total number of X800 variants has reached nine. On the one hand, the X800 GTO looks a bit more powerful than the GT, since the number of pixel pipelines in the new card is 12, not 8 like in the GT. On the other hand, the memory on the two cards is identical, and the core frequency of the X800 GT outperforms the new product (475 MHz versus 400 MHz). Summarizing the main parameters of the X800 family cards, we get the following picture:
Number of conveyors
Core frequency, MHz
Memory frequency, MHz
X800 XT PE
So, in terms of real performance as a function of price, the X800 GTO 256 MB sits roughly between the X800 XL 256 MB, which costs about 300 euros, and the X800 GT 256 MB, which sells for 180 euros. What is the rationale behind the release of another variant, when there are already a lot of other X800 variants?? The real, albeit not named, reason is probably that ATI is trying to empty the stocks of previous series chips as quickly as possible in anticipation of the release of the Radeon X1600 and X1800.
Is there any benefit to buyers? There is, and much more weighty than it might seem at first glance! Remember, we told you that GTO will be based on several different GPUs? So, if you manage to get a GTO based on a version of the R480 chip that does not have hardware blocking of pipelines by performing simple actions (updating the BIOS, and in the future, perhaps simply by running a special utility), a 12-pipelined chip can be turned into a 16-pipelined one. Add fast memory here (1.6 ms, as, for example, in the Sapphire RADEON X800GTO Fireblade) and you get a very attractive purchase option. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to say whether such a trick will work with a specific copy or not, since the cards of the same appearance will be produced on R480, R430 and R423 chips. In turn, not all R480s allow you to programmatically unlock pipelines. And the time during which such tricks with reincarnation will be possible is also limited: most likely, at the end of this – beginning of next year, GTOs will be discontinued. According to some reports, unlocking is definitely possible on Sapphire boards with the GTO designation?
