Memory module manufacturers refuse to take DDR2 “into the load”

DRAM makers are rejecting demands from memory companies to purchase a certain amount of DDR2 with each NAND flash order, according to the source.

Recall that the tactics of selling DDR2 “on load” are practiced by the largest market participants: Samsung Electronics, Hynix Semiconductor and Micron Technology. At the moment, their reaction to the refusal of memory module manufacturers to purchase DDR2 is not known.

In the recent past, consumers of memory chips were forced to agree to supplier terms as NAND production fell short of growing demand. Not the least role was played by the volumes consumed by large manufacturers of the so-called “first tier” – say, Apple and Sony. As the season’s uptick in demand draws to a close, memory manufacturers are decreasing their flash orders, which has allowed them to ditch vendor-imposed purchases of DDR2 memory that is already filling their warehouses.

Avoiding “load” deals may be temporary: if demand rises ahead of the Chinese New Year, module makers will have to make concessions again.
