Sun Unveils New Sun Fire At UltraSPARC IV+
As noted by many publications, including us, recently Sun has been increasingly paying attention to AMD Opteron server processors. However, home-grown technologies have not been forgotten, and the proof of this is the recently announced Sun Fire servers based on UltraSPARC IV + processors, which “complement and continue to move” (quote from press release – note. ed.) launched last week by the new 64-bit Galaxy.
Of course, UltraSPARC IV + servers and Opteron servers are designed for several different applications. The company’s press release also notes that from Sun’s point of view, the only real competitor to the SPARC family of processors is Power processors, due to the fact that IBM and Dell are paying less attention to Itanium, and HP-UX has already receded into oblivion.
The new Sun Fire is available in several flavors: V490, V890, E2900, E4900 and E6900. They all use 1.5 GHz UltraSPARC IV + and run Solaris 10. UltraSPARC IV + servers run up to five times faster than UltraSPARC III, according to press release.
The servers show the best results:
- Sun Fire E4900 – when used as Java Server and in SPECjbb2021 benchmark
- Sun Fire E6900 – Manugistics Fulfilment on Database Servers and Oracle9i Clusters
- Sun Fire E2900 – in IBM Lotus Domino R6iNotes
- Sun Fire V890 – also on IBM Lotus Domino R6iNotes, but on servers with more than two sockets
