Some details about the domain zone .eu

So, as we recently reported, the registration of domains in the newly formed zone began yesterday .eu for the European community. All countries within the United Europe will retain their specific zones (.fr, .de, .uk etc.d.) and at the same time get new suffixes like .fr.eu. However, this is only the first step; this space should achieve its main flourishing by placing domains directly in its root zone.

For quite a long time, the powerful governing apparatus of the European Union was dissatisfied with the situation when most of the virtual representative offices of commercial and public organizations located on its territory were located in the most popular zone – .com subject to US law. The levers for influencing the content of sites in this zone are also in the hands of US registration organizations. Hosting is generally an extremely vague business, and as a result of all this, the regulatory authorities of the European Union did not have direct means of regulating the activities of their citizens and organizations on the worldwide network.

Now the distribution of domains in the new zone will be handled by the executive division of the European Commission, EURid, as is customary in this area – a private non-profit organization. She will delegate to commercial firms the rights to register new names. This process started yesterday, as mentioned, by issuing new zones to all EU countries.

The second stage, which will last until February 6, 2021, is the distribution of domain names to the owners of registered trademarks and registered public organizations. The next step – for 2 months, names will be issued to the owners of unregistered trademarks, organizations, and – to individuals, coinciding with their surnames. The principle of the section is “who got up first, that and the slippers” (sorry for the rude analogy). And finally, from April 7th, any requested names that are not occupied by that time will be registered. The cost of registration at this and the previous stage will already be differentiated, but the specifics are not yet clear – registrars are free to set prices themselves.

Currently, according to Verisign, the name registrar in the zones .com and .net, up to half of 85.6 million. registered second-level domains fall within the zone .com, in second place with 10% zone .de. Officials from the European Union believe that after a while 25 countries, half a billion population and huge industrial and scientific potential will withdraw the zone .eu to the level of a quarter of the world’s number of domains and will serve as a unifying force not much less significant than the single currency.
