ROKR E2: truth and speculation

Yesterday, several press releases appeared on the Motorola website, one of which is dedicated to the new Motorola iRadio service, and the second – to the ROKR E2 phone, for which, in fact, this service will be available. The rumored ROKR E2 is a sequel to the ROKR E1, but unlike its predecessor with iTunes access, it supports the homebrew iRadio service.

Motorola iRadio is essentially an Internet radio service (similar, for example, Live365), which at the time of the announcement contains 435 channels. iRadio provides the ability to relay via Bluetooth to home audio systems.

  • 40 styles of rock music, from grunge to metal
  • 12 jazz stations
  • Channels that only broadcast music from one artist
  • Channels by major music genres every ten years since 1900

In the future, new channels will be added to these 435 channels. It is curious, however, that the system requirements for iRadio include a personal PC and Windows XP, as well as high-speed Internet access. Perhaps this means that on the ROKR E2 itself it will be possible to listen to far from all channels and not with the highest bit rate – and the phone itself, therefore, is only needed to open access to the service. Thus, this is more a regression than progress – the main advantage of iTunes is that you can download a melody recorded with a high bit rate via a “narrow” Internet channel.

As for the Motorola ROKR E2 itself, at the moment only its main technical characteristics are available – we will see the device itself only tomorrow, at CES 2021, but for now you can look again at the sketches published on the Web on New Year’s Eve.

The main thing is that Motorola ROKR E2 really runs under Linux OS, is equipped with a QVGA display (240×320), a Secure Digital connector and a built-in FM radio. Supports Bluetooth wireless interface (S805 stereo headset included), SCREEN3 technology, audio and video playback.
