Sony rootkit adds DRM FairPlay?
Discussions around the November scandal with copy protected Sony / BMG compacts do not subside – this time on the agenda is information that fragments of several open-source developments are used in the XCP protection of disks developed by First4Internet in violation of the GPL license – in in particular, the DRMS program, created as a result of the successful reverse engineering of the widely used digital protection (DRM) Apple FairPlay in the iTunes Music Store.
According to experts, a fully functional code is distributed on all XCP-discs, designed to add a FairPlay digital signature not only to music content on protected Sony / BMG compacts, but to perform a similar operation with the contents of ordinary audio CDs, as well as MP3 and WAV files. In practice, such manipulations mean compatibility with iTunes and iPod, which is formally impossible due to Apple’s categorical refusal to license FairPlay DRM. At the same time, the DRMS code fragments borrowed by the developers from First4Internet are not integrated into the XCP interface in any way and are not supported even by a media player with copy protected disks – technically they are stored in one of the shared libraries installed on the computer (ECDPlayerControl.ocx), which does not prevent a specialist from demonstrating its full performance (as shown in the screenshot above).
