5.9 GHz short-range communications will improve traffic safety

Members of the Dedicated Short-Range Communications (DSRC) consortium, which includes MARK IV, Raytheon, Sirit and TransCore, are ready to demonstrate equipment for short-range radio communications in the 5.9 GHz band. The demonstration will take place at the ITS World Congress, taking place these days in San Francisco. It is significant that the agreement on the development of the standard and the development of prototypes was adopted less than a year and a half ago. The second party to the development contract was the US Department of Transportation.

The 5.9 GHz band is intended for communication of vehicles with each other and with equipment installed on the route. The implementation of the system is an important step towards the implementation of long-term plans, which include warning of possible collisions, reminders of the need to comply with the speed limit on curved sections, messages about hazards along the route and other means to improve traffic safety.

The project participants expect that in 10 years of implementing the system, they will be able to halve the number of road traffic victims. DSRC slated for rollout in 2021.
