Silver and gold nanotubes, but not only

Scientists from the Weizmann Research Institute (Weizmann, Israel), who have already achieved a certain breakthrough in the creation of nanoscopic computational schemes using DNA molecules, report the development of a method for creating “nanotubes” (in quotes – because in fact they are not tubes ) of gold and silver, which can be used in nanosensors, nanocircuits or systems-on-a-chip.

“Nanotubes” made of gold or silver do not have the same outstanding mechanical strength as carbon ones, however, they can be created from particles that have certain properties – such as required by a particular task. Accordingly, such nanoparticles can be used to construct nanoscopic circuits with the desired properties: conducting, semiconducting, or non-conducting at all.

Another advantage of the new development is that “nanotubes” can be synthesized at room temperature. First, a preform made of aluminum oxide with nanoscopic pores is used, into which gold or silver nanoparticles penetrate from the solution, forming bonds with alumina membranes and with each other. After removing alumina with a solvent, the nanoparticles that are actually bonded to each other remain.

The head of the research group said that scientists expected the formation of bonds of nanoparticles with aluminum oxide, but that they bind with each other, it was a pleasant surprise. The peculiarity of the “production process” is that the nanoparticles are “packed” into the pores of aluminum oxide, which leads to the fact that the resulting “nanotubes” have a large surface area, and this allows them to be used as chemical sensors and catalysts. At the moment, scientists have also managed to create “nanotubes” of palladium and gold with a copper coating, and in the future, such technologies can be used in biotechnological developments.
