Samsung plans to end controversy over next-generation optical disc format

Winner in protracted and meaningless battle between HD-DVD and Blu-ray has not yet been determined. However, at least one of the major manufacturers decided not to wait for the outcome of this struggle. South Korean company Samsung, which previously leaned towards Blu-ray (last year it even showed off the corresponding format recorder, BD-R1000), is going to release a universal player that can handle two formats.

The head of the company’s consumer electronics division says Samsung will welcome the unified standard if there is one. Otherwise, which looks very likely, the company will “bring a joint solution to market.”. This is not to say that this is the best option, since the cost of a universal device, as a rule, is higher than that of a specialized one. At the same time, a versatile player can save consumers from the hassle of media choice when purchasing video products, which will certainly push the industry to switch to new optical discs.
