Panda Software: Panda Software’s Virus and Intrusion Weekly Report (Week 48)

Panda Software has presented a report that will examine the -BodyOnLoad- exploit, the -AVKiller Trojan.V-, and worm -Samony.B.

BodyOnLoad is a program designed to exploit the Javascript remote code execution vulnerability in Internet Explorer. Its purpose is to download any files (which poses a serious danger if these files are malware) hosted on certain sites of ‘adult’ content. The infection process begins when the user visits one of these pages, which redirects him to a second page containing BodyOnLoad.

BodyOnLoad is already being used to download and launch a Trojan designated by Panda Software as Downloader.DLE. Exploiting this security flaw, the exploit installs the -KVG file.exe- belonging to a trojan that downloads and runs two other files: -all.exe and XPsys.exe-. The last two are Downloader components.DLE. This Trojan reduces the security level of the browser; acts as an entry point for other malware and installs several files belonging to PicsPlace, a program that continuously opens pages of ‘adult’ content.

The second threat we’ll look at today is AVKiller.V, which, like all Trojans, is unable to spread itself and therefore relies on manual distribution (via email, files downloaded from the Internet, FTP transfers, or other methods). This Trojan performs the following actions on the infected computer:

  • Tries to download file SERVER.EXE from a specific site. This file is a Trojan designated by Panda Software as Banker.BHD.
  • Removes Windows registry entries corresponding to security programs to prevent them from starting at Windows startup.
  • Removes from the Program Files folder all files in the MICROSOFT ANTISPYWARE subfolder.
  • Creates two files: STRT.EXE, your copy; and VM2.DLL, component AVKiller.V, which is installed on your computer and runs every time you start Internet Explorer.
  • Creates multiple Windows registry entries to ensure that it starts at system startup.

Samony.B is a backdoor worm that spreads via email with the title: “Account # 394875948JNO Wed, 28” and containing the file “MAIN_23_C.EXE “.

After installing it on the Samony computer.B does a number of things:

  • Waits for receiving remote control commands through port 321 (downloading, launching, copying and deleting files, issuing a list of directories, etc.).d.), which allows remote administration of the computer.
  • Collects passwords stored on a computer, for example, in a secure vault where passwords for Outlook, Internet Explorer, etc. are stored.d.
  • Records keystrokes.
  • Downloads a specific web page containing a specific numeric code. If this code is equal to or greater than 0013, Samony.B will try to update itself by downloading the DOWNLOAD file from the web page.EXE.
  • Sends its copy to all contacts in the Windows Address Book, and all addresses that it finds in files with the HTML extension.
