Java Enterprise System, Development Tools & N1 Software Now Available Free
Sun Microsystems Announces Two Milestones in Next-Generation Web Platform Software. The first event saw the expansion of the Solaris Operating Environment to a full-featured open infrastructure software platform that now includes the Java Enterprise System (Java ES), full development kit, N1 software and portfolio of grid solutions, and the Solaris operating system itself. The second event is that the above software, both in a complex and separately, is now available to developers and users for free.
The combination of the Solaris operating system, Sun Studio, N1, and Java ES has all the benefits of an integrated suite, while remaining open and flexible. Sun Java Enterprise System software bundled with the Solaris Operating Environment and development tools can be installed free of charge in a variety of multi-platform environments running Windows, HPUX, or Linux.
A single free delivery allows developers and customers to get unhindered access to the infrastructure software they need to run their business. Also, customers have the opportunity to contact Sun Microsystems specialists at the stage when services for the development and implementation of software components are required. These factors significantly reduce consumer risk and allow many more companies and individuals to access a fully featured, integrated enterprise-class software portfolio.
The free new platform that combines Solaris and Java ES includes the following components:
- the award-winning open source operating system Solaris 10, including the recently announced PostgreSQL database;
- A complete delivery of the Java Enterprise System, including identity management, business integration, communications, application platform, Web infrastructure management and availability suites;
- N1 control software including Sun N1 System Manager, Sun N1 Service Provisioning System, Sun N1 Grid Engine;
- All development tools for C, C ++ and Java, including Sun Studio 11, Sun Java Studio Enterprise 8, and Sun Java Studio Creator;
- SunRay Server software;
- Sun Secure Global Desktop.
This full-featured platform integrates both proprietary and newly acquired technologies. This includes identity management software, service-oriented architecture, integrations now owned by Sun through its acquisition of SeeBeyond, and remote secure display management tools made available through Sun Microsystems’ acquisition of Tarantella. By delivering a pre-tested and integrated software platform, Sun Microsystems enables risk-free research, development, and deployment.
Sun Microsystems is also developing a wide range of new value-added services, from entry-level developer training to sophisticated remote maintenance and process automation that is currently performed manually. Sun Microsystems’ new online user service will provide administrators and developers with automated support for managing operations, including patching, upgrades, upgrades, and acceptance testing, without the need for costly professional maintenance.
Sun Microsystems continues to license software under industry standard open source licensing models. Many components of the Sun Microsystems Integrated Platform are already available as open source, including the Solaris 10 Operating System, Java Application Server, NetBeans Tools, and a few foundational tools that provide, for example, single-sign-on functionality or linking multiple independent applications in a standard way. This is one of the areas in which Sun Microsystems Corporation continues to maintain a leading position.
