Intel sets the stage for Clovertown by working with software developers
Our colleagues from the IT Week website managed to talk with the head of the processors for servers and storage devices at Intel Werner Schueler. He shared some details on Clovertown’s quad-core server processor due in summer 2021.
As we have already reported, this processor, like its “brothers” using the new Intel Core architecture (or Next Generation Micro-Architecture, NGM), has a significantly reduced power consumption with higher performance.
Schuler said there will be several versions of Clovertown, including a blade-oriented one, with a power consumption of about 80 watts. This number is obtained by a simple arithmetic operation – Clovertown includes two dual-core Woodcrest processors, each of which consumes up to 40 watts.
The new generation processors use Wide Dynamic Execution technology, which combines Intel’s changes in the number of simultaneously processed instructions (four for each core instead of three), the Micro Ops Fusion mechanism that appeared in the Pentium M and the new Macro mechanism Ops fusion. Another significant point – the second-level cache of the same Clovertown will have a size of 4 MB. And this is not a complete list.
Therefore, one of the most important problems that Intel is trying to solve in advance is the need to optimize the existing software for the new NGM architecture. The company is already working with Microsoft and Oracle to optimize software for new CPUs. We hope that history with MMX will not repeat itself, and users will not wait for programmers for years to get everything it can do from the new architecture.
