Intel calls Philips and Micron under its banner

Intel intends to join forces with Royal Philips Electronics (Philips) in its move to the consumer electronics market, already marked by the emergence of Oplus and Viiv, as announced at the IFA (Internationale Funkausstellung) in Berlin. This annual event is dedicated to consumer electronics and Philips has one of the largest exhibits.

Intel and Philips are reported to have signed an agreement under which the companies will jointly promote home infotainment systems based on Intel platforms. We are talking about personal computers Philips Showline Media Center, which will be installed 250 GB hard drives, DVD / CD burners, two TV tuners for simultaneous reception of two TV channels. In this regard, it is interesting to note that Philips, which long ago refused to distribute PCs under its own trademark, not so long ago began to sell them on the UK market. What will happen with these PCs in the future, as well as how the cooperation with Intel will affect the company’s own microprocessor department, is not reported.

In addition to plans to partner with Philips, the source also announced Intel’s intention to enter the NAND flash market – along with Micron. Intel, which specializes in NOR architecture, was even the leader of the flash memory market a couple of years ago (the company is still in the lead, but only in the NOR segment) – at that time, however, NAND was just starting to take its first steps and was not like that. as popular as it is now. The decision to enter the NAND flash memory market looks like a reasonable step, albeit a little belated – that is why it is more likely that Intel will not release a new type of flash memory for itself, but will invest in the development of the production of a more advanced partner in this area. And such a partner may well be Micron.

It should be noted that the introduction to the flash memory market is also part of Intel’s “big plan” to promote its products to the consumer electronics market – the growth in sales of NAND flash memory is due to the high demand for digital cameras, camcorders, cell phones and PDAs. According to iSuppli, in the second quarter of this year, flash memory was sold in the amount of 4.1 billion. dollars, which is 4% more than in the first quarter (3.9 billion.) and 2.5% more sales volumes in the second quarter of 2021 (4.0 billion. dollars). Most of the sales came from NAND-based microcircuits, and this pattern has been observed for the second quarter in a row.

Finally, it’s worth mentioning the special relationship between Micron and Intel – when the latter withdrew from the DRAM market in the late 1980s, the processor manufacturer would have liked to have had a memory source at its disposal to take advantage of during tough times. It was then that an agreement arose with Micron, according to which Intel acquired 8% of the company’s shares for 450 million. dollars and received the right to priority purchase of up to 8% of DRAM chips at the current market price. And although Micron’s flash production share is small – only 10% of total production, it is unlikely that Intel will turn to Samsung, its worst competitor in the flash memory market, or Hynix, whose financial well-being is constantly threatened from the outside. creditors, US and EU officials.
