IBM builds nanotube ICs
IBM claims it was able to build an integrated circuit based on ultra-low-grade nanotubes before NEC, which promised to do so by 2021. This is not the first IBM success in this area – the company also owns the laurels of the discoverer of nanotubes that emit light. True, strictly speaking, the latest development of IBM is not yet an integrated circuit, but this is already a step forward towards their creation.
“Integrated circuit” IBM is a five-stage cyclic generator built on 12 field-effect transistors, made on the same carbon nanotube. An analogue of the complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor structure was obtained by “adjusting” the functionality of individual p- and n-type field-effect transistors.
Carbon nanotubes are known for their outstanding electrical properties – according to IBM, the mean free path of an electron at room temperature reaches several hundred nanometers.
In addition, IBM reports that nanotube transistors have much better DC transfer performance than most advanced silicon devices. Having learned how to create many transistors on one nanotube and being able to synthesize them, it remains to learn how to “pack” them in a case – and the first integrated circuits on nanotubes will appear at the disposal of the developers.
