New line of NVIDIA nForce 500 chipsets

The imminent release of motherboards based on the ATI CrossFire Xpress 3200 chipset probably contributed to the rather early announcement by NVIDIA of their chipsets under the general name nForce 500. Real products based on these chipsets will appear in the middle of the year, but for now it is known that only 4 of them (chipsets) models will be available for different market segments:

  • nForce 590 SLI MCP – Enthusiast Solution;
  • nForce 570 SLI MCP – solution for the productive sector;
  • nForce 570 MCP – the same as the previous one, but without SLI support;
  • nForce 550 MCP – Mass Sector.

The main technological innovation, of course, will be the presence of two PCI Express graphics ports in motherboards based on the first two of the presented chipsets, 16 lanes for each. This is where ATI has pulled ahead with its RD580 (aka CrossFire Xpress 3200).

The nForce4 MCP 500 chipsets will be used by desktop motherboard manufacturers AMD and Intel, as well as in the AMD mobile platform. The release of new motherboards Abit, Albatron, Aopen, ASUSTeK, Biostar, DFI, ECS, Epox, Foxconn, Gigabyte, Jetway, MSI has already been announced.

Among the main features of its new chipset, NVIDIA cites support for Quad SLI configuration with four GPUs installed simultaneously; NVIDIA MediaShield technology, which provides a variety of configurations for creating a disk array, including dual RAID 5; up to 10 USB ports 2.0, up to six SATA II hard drives and support for upcoming dual-core AMD Socket AM2 processors.

Despite the fact that NVIDIA did not directly indicate the type of memory that will be used in its new platform, we can confidently assume that it will be DDR2, in versions for Intel (LGA775) and AMD (Socket AM2) processors.

The exact timing of the release of motherboards has not been announced, it is likely that this event will take place along with the start of sales of AMD Socket AM2 processors in June this year.
