Panda Software: First Malicious Code Appears To Exploit Internet Explorer Vulnerability

PandaLabs discovered the first ‘adult’ web pages attempting to install malware on computers, exploiting a vulnerability recently discovered in Internet Explorer that has yet to be fixed. This vulnerability has not yet been fixed, so you need to update your antivirus to block this malicious code.

PandaLabs Announces First Samples of Malware Installed on Users’ Computers Using Critical JavaScript Windows Remote Code Execution Vulnerability in Internet Explorer. This action is performed by ‘adult’ web pages and allows malware to be injected into systems. Given that there is currently no fix for this vulnerability, the spread of this threat within a few hours can become extremely serious and therefore, users are advised to update their antivirus software and make sure that it is able to recognize the action of this “pest”.

The infection mechanism starts when a user visits any of a number of pages on an ‘adult’ topic. The page redirects the user to a second page containing an exploit (designated by Panda as Exploit / BodyOnLoad) that installs the first malicious code called keks.exe. After installation on the computer, this code downloads and runs the second file, all.exe. Both of these files have received the designation Downloader.DLE and their purpose is to lower the security levels of the browser in order to allow other malicious programs to penetrate the computer. Sometimes the exploit won’t work; in this scenario, an Explorer error is returned and no infection occurs.

If Downloader.DLE succeeds, it installs several files on the computer, including the annoying Adware / PicsPlace clicker that continuously opens pornographic pages, as well as several malicious cookies. Clickers are used to open pages on infected systems, which generates financial income for malware creators by increasing the number of website visits. It is also programmed to periodically download a file with addresses of other URLs, to which it then connects, which is the risk of subsequent infection of the computer with new versions of malicious codes.

The Javascript windows remote code execution vulnerability in Internet Explorer was first discovered on November 21, and is present in Internet Explorer running Microsoft Windows 98, Windows 98 SE, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows 2000 Service Pack 4, Windows XP Service Pack 1, and Windows XP Service Pack 2. The fix for her is still non-existent!
