NEC: the “brightest” LCD panel for portable devices

As you know, one of the “weak links” of portable devices, including PDAs and mobile phones, is the low brightness of the screen, which is especially inconvenient when working in daylight. In the presence of backlight, acceptable brightness is achieved, but at the expense of increased power consumption, which is critical for devices running on batteries. Transreflective displays use external light reflected from a reflective substrate, but color quality is impaired.

For “battery-powered” devices, therefore, the best option is a combination of these two approaches – a display that is equally readable in all lighting conditions. The challenge in creating the perfect Semi-transmissive screen is finding the optimal balance between the two lighting modes.

NEC says it has found this sweet spot. Reportedly, the developers have been able to increase the amount of light reflected from the reflective substrate and achieve much higher levels of brightness and contrast than existing LCDs of this type.

3.5 ” NL2432HC22-40A panel delivers 220 cd / m2 brightness?, which is 130% higher than competing products. Development ahead and in contrast – 150: 1 versus 90: 1. The reflectivity of the substrate of the NL2432HC22-40A is 15%, which is twice that of the “regular”. In addition, NEC introduced a DC / DC converter and timer in the new product, which should reduce the final cost of portable devices.

Panel samples are reported to begin shipping in June.
