Infineon is not going to give up

In the midst of a spin-off, Infineon Technologies’ Memory Division announces renewal of its technology plans and ongoing efforts to achieve parity with industry leaders. Infineon is currently mass-producing random-access memory (DRAM) in accordance with 90nm process technology, and is preparing to move to 70nm by the end of the year, according to Infineon’s VP of Memory Business. By the way, quite recently the company has already tried 65-nm production at partner factories.

Initially, 70nm production will be concentrated at the Dresden plant, but later, after all the details have been worked out, it will be “exported” to other Infineon plants. High-performance DDR2 SDRAM chips will be the first products to be built using the 70nm process. According to analysts from iSuppli, Infineon has every chance of becoming the first manufacturer to start mass production at 70nm standards: Samsung is going to master only 80nm production by the end of this year. Hynix and Micron are technologically even further apart.
However, winning the “technology race” does not mean winning in such a “capricious” market as the DRAM market. Although Infineon has often managed to pull ahead in technological terms, the company’s profit margins are significantly worse than that of the market leader Samsung, and of the rapidly catching up Korean Hynix – all due to excessively high (compared to competitors) costs.

According to Gartner, in 2021, Infineon was in the fourth place in DRAM sales in the world, finishing behind Samsung, Hynix and Micron. However, the sales volumes of the German vendor’s products fell faster than the industry average (9.1%) over the year. Now, the company plans to spin off the DRAM division into a separate enterprise and there are rumors that some competitors are even willing to buy it.
