Cisco enhances the security of its networking products
In an official press release, Cisco Systems announces the modernization of the Network Admission Control (NAC) network access control infrastructure, which allows organizations using its equipment to prevent the spread of spyware, viruses and worms trying to access the network using various terminal devices.
The Cisco NAC Infrastructure now provides support for Cisco Catalyst switches and wireless solutions, an expansion of the NAC Partner Program to include a new agentless auditing category, and an update to the NAC family of hardware and software solutions (formerly known as the Cisco Clean Access line). All changes are based on the Cisco Self-Defending Network security strategy, which enhances customers’ ability to identify and prevent security threats, as well as adapt to constantly changing technologies.
Cisco Offers New NAC Infrastructure Deployment Scenarios – Framework Deployment Scenarios.
In addition to WAN capabilities, Cisco has developed tools to identify non-compliant systems before they gain access to the local network and wireless network environment: capabilities to identify and assess the security of an environment while blocking incompatible systems for further consideration. Information about them is accumulated and distributed within the NAC infrastructure using the new version of Cisco Trust Agent (CTA) 2.0, a key endpoint technology. The inclusion of Catalyst switches and wireless solutions in the NAC infrastructure gives customers a new resource to prevent the threat of potential infection of other corporate resources at the initial stage, before an attacker gains access to the local network.
Cisco is also announcing new capabilities to assess the security risk of unmanaged or agentless devices, including endpoints that do not support CTA but are trying to access the network. This improvement was achieved in the course of joint work with a new category of suppliers in the framework of the NAC partner program, including Altiris, Qualys, Symantec (through the acquisition of WholeSecurity). Working together with solutions from these vendors can dramatically increase the risk assessment capability of agentless devices such as printers, PDAs, IP phones, and guest laptops. These devices can be analyzed by means of a new category from Cisco partners. The audit results are sent back to the network to obtain the correct decision on granting them access.
All of these innovations, combined with end-to-end security and patch management software solutions from over 60 NAC contributors, empower customers to leverage their infrastructure and software investments, create an effective access control system that mitigates risk and ensures more high levels of network availability and business efficiency.
Cisco NAC Hardware and Software Family Updates.
The Cisco NAC Network Access Control Infrastructure overhaul also includes the release of a new family of out-of-the-box NAC hardware and software solutions that scan, block, filter, and repair incompatible devices and enforce security policies. The new family includes hardware solutions that complement existing software products for more flexible deployment.
In addition, the NAC family of hardware and software solutions comes preconfigured to scan for spyware using algorithms from leading anti-spyware vendors. This gives customers an easy and effective way to find and remove spyware across their entire NAC-protected network, as well as an extra layer of protection. The new version of this Cisco NAC solution also offers single sign-on capability with the Cisco ASA 5500 Series and Cisco VPN 3000 Series Remote Access Concentrators, which increases control over the provision of access to remote users without complicating their work.
NAC infrastructure support for the Cisco Catalyst 6500, 4500, 4900, 3700, 3500, and 2900 Series Switches is available as a software upgrade, and Cisco wireless platforms including the Cisco Catalyst 6500 WLSM, Cisco Aironet Access Points, Cisco Aironet Lightweight Access Points, and Cisco Wireless Platforms LAN Controller is available as part of Cisco IOS Software Release 1 packages.four.1, Cisco IOS Software Release 12.3 (7) JA or Cisco Unified Wireless Network Software Release 3.1, at no additional charge to customers with product support contracts. Hardware and software systems are also already available for order.
