Flexible display – a gift from the University of Tokyo to the blind
Last year we announced a development that facilitates communication for blind and visually impaired people – the BrailleNote PDA. Japanese developers from the University of Tokyo decided to go even further by creating a display based on organic transistors that can display braille characters.
The principle of operation of the display is as follows – polymer actuators (movers) are applied to a flexible substrate, controlled by transistors made on the same substrate.
Due to the fact that both the actuators and the control electronics are made of practically the same material, the new display has a record low thickness of about 1 mm and a mass of several grams. Traditional braille displays use solenoids or piezoelectric actuators, which of course are much thicker. In addition, the new display can be rolled up and removed.
In total, the display is capable of displaying 24 characters, each of which contains 4×6 cells 3×2 dots with a diameter of about 1 mm. Display dimensions: 40×40 mm, refresh rate – 1 Hz. Point lifting height – 0.5 mm.
