Optical microcircuit provides 1.6 Tbit data transfer in one second
For the third time in three years, Infinera reports record data rates achieved in its laboratories. This time, an optical integrated circuit (photonic integrated circuit, PIC), created by the company’s employees, can transmit up to 1.6 terabits of information in one second. According to Infinera, this is the maximum speed achieved so far using a single PIC. Last year, the company demonstrated a similar system providing 400 Gbps transmission.
According to the developers, the demonstration shows the potential of optical integrated circuits, which, in turn, can become a key element of optical networks against the background of the rapid growth in the volume of data streams in the global network. If we express the bandwidth of the new Infinera product in application units, it is easy to calculate that the microcircuit is capable of transmitting simultaneously 50 million IP-telephony calls or 160,000 HDTV programs.
More than 240 optical devices operate as part of a single-chip system, forming 40 data transmission channels, each with a bandwidth of 40 Gbit / s. Tentatively, such a microcircuit is capable of replacing 160 cards commonly used in today’s long-distance networks.
Plans to master the technology in serial production have not yet been announced.
