New image sensor technology – up to 100x savings

Researchers from the University of Rochester, who have been featured in our news more than once, have distinguished themselves with their next development – the technology of economical and small-sized image sensors, which, according to the source, “allows cameras the size of a button to work for several years on one battery.”.

To be precise, scientists offer two technologies at once. The first is oversampling by the ADC at each pixel of the CMOS sensor. At the same time, it was possible to bypass with only three transistors – a similar approach was proposed earlier, but ran into the need for too many transistors and, as a result, the high cost and low sensitivity of the sensors. By the way, in the future, scientists propose to add a hardware implementation of compression algorithms to the sensor – also at the pixel level.

In the meantime, in order to reduce the electricity consumed during the compression process, the developers offer a little trick: instead of the regular arrangement of the photosensitive elements and further discrete Fourier transform of the resulting image, the photodetectors in the sensor can be arranged so that they are located at the maximum points of the sinusoidal curves. It is argued that in this way the number of calculations required to convert a picture from RAW to JPEG can be reduced by a factor of five.

At the same time, in the video recording mode with a refresh rate of 30 frames per second, the chip consumes only 0.88 nW (nanowatt), which, according to the source, is 100 times less than some modern CMOS sensors. It is also argued that the dynamic range of the chip has also become no worse, and better than its predecessors – 1: 100000 (or 100 dB) – but this, presumably, due to the fact that the image sensor is supposed to be produced at a rate of about 65 nm.

Researchers plan to integrate the proposed technologies into commercially available wireless surveillance cameras – these devices are very critical to power consumption.
