Intel releases its first dual-core Xeon

Intel unveiled its first server microprocessor with two cores in a single chip in a bid to close the gap with rival AMD on Monday.

The Xeon processor (codenamed Paxville) is still available in a single variant, clocked at 2.80 GHz, supports DDR2-400 memory, has 2 MB of L2 cache, and is priced at $ 1,043 apiece for bulk orders. According to some reports, the release of the processor in its current form is a temporary measure designed to cover up Intel’s gaping absence in the market for dual-core server processors. Another Xeon processor (codenamed Dempsey) is due early next year, this time “truly” dual-core.

According to the company, it is possible that the difference in performance between a server based on the new processor and a server based on two single-core processors (Irwindale Xeon DP) will reach 50%. At the same time, the new processor should consume less energy. The new microprocessor is expected to be used in servers and workstations by manufacturers such as Dell, Hewlett-Packard and IBM.

Intel originally did not plan to release a dual-core Xeon until 2021. But in August, the company announced that development was ahead of schedule and the processor could be released in the second half of this year.

As a reminder, AMD released the Opteron, its 64-bit dual-core processor for high-performance servers, back in April. Over the years, many leading computer manufacturers have expanded their offerings with Opteron-based products. Intel, in turn, developed the Xeon within a 32-bit architecture, assigning the 64-bit segment to the Itanium chip. However, the impressive success of the 64-bit AMD Opteron processor has forced the company to reconsider its plans and attend to equipping the Xeon with 64-bit extensions.
