Panda Software: Virus and Intrusion Report: New Trojan for Cell Phones (Week 9 of 2021)
This weekly report from Panda Software will look at a curious Trojan – RedBrowser.A. This Trojan combines two trends that are likely to dominate in 2021 – cell phone malware and a malware-based business model.
Today we are witnessing a new trend in the development of malicious codes. Instead of traditional actions (deleting files), hackers are now trying to make financial profit with their creations. With that in mind, the creator of RedBrowser.A developed an application that simulates access to WAP pages through free SMS messages. In reality, the message is sent via SMS service to number 1615. Sending a message to this number is highly charged in Russia, which brings a lot of profit to the service provider.
However, before sending the message, the user is asked for confirmation, thereby the malicious potential of RedBrowser.A decreases significantly. In addition, users can easily spot the Trojan as it arrives on the phone in a file called REDBROWSER.JAR and displays the image on the screen.
Another clear example of a malicious business model is the Nabload Trojans.BR and Banker.CDV. Nabload.BR is a Trojan that bypasses the Windows XP firewall and goes online to perform actions, including downloading Banker.CDV. This password-stealing Trojan monitors users’ access to certain online services, such as banks and postal services in English and German. Thus, he receives passwords, user information and other confidential data. After that, it sends the collected information to a specific web page.
