Fuel cells got a pass to board the plane
As you know, the development of power supplies based on fuel cells is carried out by both large companies and small developers. Some of them have achieved notable success in this field. For example, Casio announced the readiness of laptop fuel cells almost two years ago. South Korean specialists planned to start using similar power sources last year. And although Nokia considered that it is too early to introduce fuel cells, Canon, for example, sees the prospect of new power sources for portable equipment. Advances in nanotechnology are helping to accelerate progress towards the practical use of alternative power sources based on fuel cells – just remember the sensational results of the work of researchers at the University of Wisconsin.
For a long time, one of the limiting factors on the way of fuel cells was the fact that methanol and other substances used in them are sources of increased danger and are prohibited for carriage by air without complying with special requirements. Obviously, not a single laptop or phone owner will be involved in obtaining permits and acquiring special containers for transporting “batteries” in order to use the plane.
The situation has changed recently – the International Electrotechnical Commission, which is considering issues related to standardization in the field of electrical and electronic engineering (International Electrotechnical Commission, IEC), which, by the way, this year marks 100 years since the day of its foundation, has published safety specifications for small-sized fuel cells capable of powering personal electronic devices. This is a significant step towards the commercialization of new technology. It is expected that the IEC specification, figuratively speaking, will help fuel cells get a pass on board the aircraft.
The specification covers a wide range of materials including methanol, formic acid, borohydride, butane and hydrogen. Compliance with the specification is a mandatory requirement for devices that are allowed to be transported on passenger aircraft, according to the instructions of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Simply put, this means portable fuel cell powered devices will be able to board an aircraft as early as next year.
