Intel: 32-bit instructions in Montecito – only at the software level
According to information received from Intel by our colleagues from the TG Daily website, the new Montecito processors (for more information about them here and here), the next generation of the 64-bit Itanium architecture, will execute 32-bit application instructions only in software emulation mode, which, however, it will be faster than working in hardware emulation of 32-bit mode.
The transition from emulation of 32-bit instructions at the on-chip level by the kernel firmware to emulation by an external program is also described in the appendix to the document Dual-Core Update to the Intel Itanium 2 Reference Manual. Emulation support (IA-32 Execution Layer, IA-32 EL) will be implemented at the operating system level and is available only after its (OS) boot.
According to Scott McLaughlin, spokesman for Intel, the company was prompted to move away from hardware emulation of 32-bit applications because IA-32 EL scales well application performance, has full compatibility with previously written programs and allows the processor manufacturer to use core transistors that would be responsible for executing x86 applications for other purposes.
Unfortunately, there is no new information on the timing of the availability of solutions on the Montecito platform.
