How much memory will Vista need?
Most computer users are a little wary of Windows Vista, which will present seemingly unprecedented hardware requirements. We have already written about the need for DirectX 9 support from a video card.
As for the RAM – Vista will not install on a computer with less than 512 MB of DRAM. Microsoft recommends 1 GB or higher. It is also necessary to take into account that the integrated graphics core uses system memory, and for such systems even 512 MB will not be enough for Vista.
In the new operating system, we will further develop the already used Prefetch technology, called Superfetch. It consists in loading frequently used files into the paging file and RAM (in addition, NAND flash can be used when it appears on systems). Thus, an increase in the launch speed of frequently used programs is achieved, however, the RAM is filled and its free volume decreases.
Tom Trill, Intel’s director of DRAM marketing, says system memory typically costs 6-8%. Retail price for 512 MB DDR2-667 module has risen from 60 to 80 dollars in the last couple of months. AMD and Intel Prepare to Release DDR2-800 Processors Before Vista Releases. Considering the requirements of the operating system, we can assume that 1 GB will become the norm for ready-made PCs at the end of this year. Thus, the share of memory in the price of the system will increase.
We have already written about Samsung’s plans to make money on Vista. Then it was about graphics systems and flash memory. But we must not forget that the Korean company is one of the largest DRAM manufacturers. According to her own calculations, the average amount of RAM in a PC will reach 871 MB by the end of 2021, compared to 620 MB at the beginning of the year. Naturally, Samsung and other manufacturers are eagerly awaiting the release of the new OS, which is scheduled for November 2021.
