AMD is preparing a new trump card in the competition
AMD and Innovative Silicon signed a memory licensing agreement that uses the so-called “floating-body” effect. The memory is manufactured using the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology, and its highlight is that instead of a separate capacitor in the cell, the capacitance of the top layer of SOI is used. This is reflected in the name of the memory – Z-RAM (zero capacitor). We talked about the developments of Innovative Silicon about a year ago, and in December last year, the Japanese company Toshiba announced a trial release of Z-RAM.
And now the developments of Innovative Silicon have a chance for real use in the cache memory of microprocessors. According to the developer, the density of the new type of memory is five times higher than the density of embedded SRAM, which is currently used in processor caches, and twice as compared to embedded DRAM. Since the new memory is manufactured using SOI technology, it is ideal for AMD, which releases its processors using this technology. According to Craig Sander, AMD vice president of technology development, the significant density increase provided by Z-RAM will significantly increase the amount of microprocessor cache. Consequently, the performance of the processors will increase and the power consumption of the I / O circuits will decrease.
Thus, the agreement could give AMD a new trump card in the fight against rival Intel, which has so far expressed itself in the sense that it does not see the need for a transition to SOI technology. Licensing may also matter to IBM and Chartered Semiconductor companies with which AMD has partnerships.
Of course, the potential of the technology in real-world applications remains to be tested. This is exactly what AMD intends to do in the near future. Sander said that the tests will involve technological processes in compliance with 65 and 90 nm standards. The corresponding plates are made by the AMD factory in Dresden.
Sander did not comment on the possibility of mastering the novelty in serial 65-nm production, and did not name any timeframe for implementation. He noted that in addition to the test results, the introduction of Z-RAM into the series depends on the existing production plans. At the same time, Sander confirmed that at this stage AMD is focusing on using Z-RAM only for microprocessors. In order for Z-RAM to be used by other chips, they must first be converted to SOI technology.
