Half of modern computers have video cards that are not suitable for Vista

As you know, by the end of this year, the computer world expects the release of Vista – Microsoft’s new operating system for personal computers. Meanwhile, according to analysts at Jon Peddie Research, more than half of the computer park at the disposal of users today will not allow them, as the movie character said, “to understand the full depth of our depths.”. The delights of the 3D interface implemented in Vista OS will remain advertising declarations for them.

The basis for this conclusion was the analysis of data collected during the fourth quarter of last year.

The reason for the unavailability of computers for the arrival of the new OS is the limited functionality of integrated graphics adapters. They quite cope with the responsibilities assigned to them, working under Windows XP and Windows 2000. However, the “bells and whistles” required to display the 3D interface created in Vista using the Windows Desktop Compositing Engine are missing. Meanwhile, the share of computers (including desktops, laptops and servers) with integrated graphics in 2021 shipments is 63%.

In order for the computer to work with the three-dimensional interface (Aero Glass), the video subsystem must support DirectX 9.0c.

According to experts Jon Peddie Research, a suitable additional graphics card will cost the buyer $ 75-100. In addition, the amount of memory 256 MB is called acceptable – it is enough to boot the OS and use the PC for office purposes. Of course, more complex tasks, for example, watching high-definition video recordings recorded on HD DVD, raise the bar in terms of performance of the CPU, video card and system memory – it should be at least 2 GB.

Do not forget the new version of the DirectX library – the tenth (also known as Windows Graphics Foundation 2.0). So far, no hardware (we are talking about GPUs) has been named that fully supports all known DirectX 10 features. For example, “geometric” shaders, which are the next step in the evolution of graphics after the currently used vertex.

In other words, the release of a new version of the OS will inevitably raise questions about updating the PC. More precise information on this subject will appear when Microsoft publishes the final Vista hardware requirements for computers.
