Ultra-efficient photo detector: for space communications and beyond

Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) report the creation of a photodetector, the quantum yield (efficiency of converting photons into photoelectrons) of which at a wavelength of 1550 nm is 57%. For comparison, the quantum yield of commercially available photodiodes for this wavelength, which is actively used in optical communications, is usually only about 20%.

Especially the achievement of MIT scientists should be delighted with people specializing in space communications – higher efficiency of photodetectors means higher bandwidth, since less redundant information can be encoded for error correction algorithms to work. MIT believes that in the near future, color video communication of space stations, including remote (for example, Martian probes) with the earth will not be any problem. In addition, high efficiency means high sensitivity of the sensors capable of operating in single photon counting mode.

To increase the efficiency of the photodetector, an anti-reflective coating was added to its design, which reduces the reflection of light from the surface of the sensor and a “photon trap”, which is an optical resonator and a calibrated gap between the glass and the conductive mirror surface (metal). Detection (conversion of a photon into an electron) occurs on a microscopic mirror, which is cooled to helium temperatures, the metal becomes superconducting and it becomes possible to detect the absorption of single photons. If the photon is not absorbed at the first contact with the mirror, it returns to the resonator and is reflected from its walls for some time, until it leaves it or is absorbed by the detector.

Such a photodetector can also be used in quantum cryptography systems or biomedical sensors.
