Brain Computer Interface: mental control of a computer

“The head is a dark object, incomprehensible to science,” said the hero of the classics of Soviet cinema. Nevertheless, science does not stand still and devices for controlling a computer “by the power of thought” are in development.

Specialists of the Berlin Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Architecture and Software Technology will present at CeBIT a device that makes it possible to manipulate objects on a computer screen by reading signals from the human brain using sensors.

The development team, led by Professors Klaus-Robert Mueller and Gabriel Curio, has been improving the Brain Computer Interface for several years on the basis of the neurology department of the Charite hospital. The goal was to create a brain-controlled device that would enable people with limited mobility to communicate with the outside world.
Even if a person is completely paralyzed and cannot move their eyes, their brain produces signals that are picked up by 128 sensors (electrodes similar to those used when taking an electroencephalogram). Specific impulses are filtered out using software, which are recognized and determine the necessary actions.

The system is capable of self-learning and identifies “palettes” of signals for each personality individually. Now Brain Computer Interface allows, by moving the cursor mentally, to select the necessary letters on the screen. It takes 5 to 10 minutes to type a phrase. It is even more difficult with sensors – it takes about an hour to install them. Institute spokesman Mirjam Kaplow says the technology will leap when they develop proximity sensors. This device will look like a helmet, with its help it will also be possible to diagnose injured patients at the scene.

In addition, such an interface can be used in the entertainment industry, for example, video games. Another use case is automotive security systems.
